Colposacropexy Overview
There are several different forms of pelvic organ prolapse that can impact women in the Plano, Frisco and Dallas, Texas area. One type is vaginal vault prolapse. This occurs when the vagina’s upper portion loses its normal shape and drops down into the vaginal canal or outside of the vagina. When this occurs, a surgical procedure is often required to treat the condition and its symptoms. Dr. Dennis Eisenberg, board certified OBGYN, offers the colposacropexy procedure using robotic surgery as an excellent way to treat vaginal vault prolapse with a minimally invasive technique.
What is Vaginal Vault Prolapse?
Many women experience a ‘falling out’ sensation of the vagina, typically after having a hysterectomy. This is because the uterus provides support for the top of the vagina. When the uterus is removed, the vagina no longer has a structure to hold on to. Women may also experience vaginal vault prolapse if the pelvic and vaginal tissues and muscles lose strength over an extended period of time.
Vaginal vault prolapse causes a number of unwanted symptoms, with the most common symptoms including urinary incontinence and bowel movement complications. In more severe cases, a bulge can be seen protruding between the legs because the vagina has turned inside out and fell through the vaginal opening.
What is Colposacropexy?
A surgical procedure known as a colposacropexy is an effective way to treat vaginal vault prolapse in a minimally invasive manner. Many patients can go home the same day as the surgery and often have a very short recovery period with few restrictions.
Colposacropexy is performed through the abdomen or vagina. Using laparoscopic equipment, three to four small incisions are made in the abdomen to insert the telescopic camera and surgical instruments, and then the vagina is reattached to the sacral bone. Certain procedures may involve use of either the patient’s tissue or artificial material to secure the vagina in place.
