An Overview of Myomectomy

Uterine fibroids are a common health condition in women living in the communities of Plano, Frisco and Dallas, Texas. These benign (non-cancerous) tumors are composed of muscular tissue and most often occur during childbearing years. Many women have these fibroids, but many are not aware since they are small and cause no symptoms. In certain women, the tumors become so large they require a surgical uterine fibroid treatment known as a myomectomy. Board certified OBGYN, Dr. Dennis Eisenberg specializes in this procedure in order to eliminate troublesome symptoms and return normal reproductive health to women.

What are Uterine Fibroids?

Uterine fibroids appear in a large number of women during their reproductive years. These tumors can be as small as an apple seed to as large as a grapefruit. Women can have only one fibroid present or multiple ones. In the most extreme cases, multiple fibroids can extend the uterus to the point it touches the rib cage.

Uterine fibroid symptoms are not always present. Many women who have fibroids are not aware because they cause no pain or discomfort. If symptoms are present, they typically include:

  • Heavy and/or prolonged menstrual cycles
  • Pelvic pain and pressure
  • Frequent urination and a feeling the bladder is not empty
  • Constipation
  • Leg pain and/or back pain

Uterine Fibroid Treatment

If symptoms are present, Dr. Eisenberg will select the appropriate uterine fibroid treatment. Factors that are considered include:

  • Size of the fibroid
  • Location of the fibroid
  • Future pregnancies
  • Age and/or approaching menopause

Myomectomy as a Surgical Treatment

A surgical procedure known as a myomectomy is often recommended by Dr. Eisenberg if symptoms are moderate to severe. This surgical uterine fibroid treatment is designed to remove the tumors without removing any of the healthy tissue of the uterus.

A myomectomy can be performed utilizing numerous techniques. Dr. Eisenberg specializes in the da Vinci robotic surgical system and laparoscopy, both minimally invasive surgeries that limit recovery time, pain and surgical complications. In more severe cases, an open surgery may need to be performed in order to remove all bothersome tumors.

Dr. Eisenberg will select the appropriate surgical method based on severity of the fibroid tumors. He will then explain the procedure and post-operative rehabilitation protocols in great detail with each patient.
